Real or not?

I would have my students investigate the websites they are on by doing the following:

1. Check what kind of domain it is. .edu versus .com
2. Check to see if it is a personal site as opposed to that of a university or educational institution.
3. Make sure that the website that that is supposed to be informational or educational is not trying to sell you something by telling you that if you want the rest of the "report", you have to pay an absurd amount for it like $49.95, etc.
4. Does the name of the website make sense with what you see on the url address bar to spot out a scam or someone who might be trying to give the wrong information about something.
5. Look for he author of the news or education article and search for information online about the author to try to see if they are real and indeed wrote what you read.
6. Does an educational article give you more information such as referring you to other websites or publications that can support the information you are reading?
7. Do the authors of an article show upon search engine results easily?
8. Check for the presence of frequent spelling and grammar which can suggest that something may have been recopied from another source and presented as their own.
9. Check the tone or intention of the web site to distinguish between someone that is informative and not enticing others to do something controversial.
10. If in doubt, check back with me or any other teacher if I am not in the room.
